I upgraded my homeschool blog to WordPress 2.5 today. I must say that so far I really like it. It is greatly streamlined and easy to use. The upgrade was no trouble at all. I don’t have 2.5 on my server yet so I did the upgrade via FTP and as usual with WordPress it was a very simple, to the point, easy upgrade.
I wrote a rather short post about the transition; you can go read it if you like. One of the features I have been so looking forward to using is the Media Library. I love that all those tools are built into WordPress now. I’ll be upgrading this blog soon too, but first I’m going to be moving it to a new server. We self-host all our websites and the church’s website as well. I’ve been waiting for this account to be close to expiration before I moved it. I’ll probably be doing the move this weekend. And I’ll upgrade at the same time. You guys shouldn’t notice any change though other than some down time while all the servers propagate.
If you would like to see how the new WordPress 2.5 Gallery looks in a post check out my post about our trip to The American Village. I wrote a regular post and saved it to continue working on it. Then I began uploading the photos via the Gallery button. (I did have one issue that caused the need for a small bit of code to be written to my .htaccess file, but once I did that I was set.) I uploaded 53 photos, chose to delete 2 after realizing they were so similar to two others I had. After I uploaded the photos I was able to show the details and make any desired changes or edits that I wanted to make. Now, to do the editing in this pop-up box is a bit tedious for a total of 51 files. I decided to save all my changes and go to the Media Library tab and just edit them one at a time. I found this was actually faster for me. To each his own, right? If I only had a few photos uploaded this would have worked just fine for me as I could do everything right there is the Write Post page. After I completed the editing and writing of the post I reopened the Gallery link via the little button and clicked “add to post”. A little piece of code was added to the bottom of my post linking and coding all the images into thumbnails for your viewing pleasure.
Here’s more neat stuff about the gallery: for each photo/file I had the option to include/edit the title (this is the same as what the file is called on your computer when you upload it); include a caption (this is what you see under each photo thumbnail in the single post page view); and then there is the description (what you see when you click on the photo and it gets taken to its own page like an individual post).
If I have confused you, just go look and see for yourself. If you want you can leave a comment under my main post about the field trip and under each individual photo. It’s like my own personal flickr.

Wow! That’s great. I don’t know that I’m that computer literate, but it looks great.
