That time of year
Well, it’s that time of year again. As you can see I’ve changed things up a bit. We are preparing for the first phase of “that time of year”. We love to call it the beginning of candy season. It’s the time of year for the never ending candy stash to start building. This is the time of year I eat way too much candy corn and too many Reese’s. But those Reese’s are so good and so appropriate for this time of year.
It’s fall. I love fall. I love the sites and sounds of fall. I can’t stand the sound of crickets, but the song of the cicada can lull me to sleep anytime. We had a rash of them a week or so ago. We were fortunate enough to witness the appearance of one or two and watch them fly away.
They are gone for now. Or at least it seems. The song of the cicada has been quiet for a few days now. I will miss it. Everything is moving fast right now. It’s part of the season. Things pick up quickly, the pace. This begins the busy-ness of life.

School began last month, scouting, times two, has picked up a pace that is moving at a brisk pace. Soccer, times two, is keeping us moving a few nights a week and on Saturday mornings.
We have no complaints about the children’s activities. We rather enjoy them. We just have to stay on top of it all to make sure we don’t lose sight of the important things - the actual living of life. Sometimes we get so busy we forget to enjoy living.
This is the season of change.
And the smells. Ah, the smells. I have written before about the smells of Autumn and what I love. Many of you have shared in response. I like knowing what you enjoy about all the change. anything new for you this year?
The temperature is nicer these days, too. It makes the weeknight soccer practices and the Saturday morning soccer games more bearable. And forget Spring Fever. How about Fall Fever and the goofiness it provokes?
Have you noticed the days are getting shorter? Everything seems so abbreviated. Especially my thoughts.
This Thursday we will have a nine year old birthday supper. Where has the time gone? She started life so small and early and she is almost a decade old.
Halloween is just around the corner. What are you going to be dressed as? What’s your favorite Halloween candy? Is it still around or has it been replaced by some new grab-the-kiddos-attention-goo?
It won’t be long before a big bird is in our freezer again, just thinking about it makes my mouth water. It’s not as big as last year, but still plenty big.
We’ll have a 2nd birthday that week. Maybe I’ll stick the candles in the turkey.

the boy is killing me! your babies-how i want to squuuueeeeze them!
I don’t know what I’ll be dressed as. My son vacillates between various superheroes. My daughter - hasn’t decided yet? I’m trying to decide whether I should ahem, encourage them to go homemade and creative, or let, for example, my son just wear his Batman costume.
I love Skittles… also Halloween candy generally, especially the little bite sized portions. You can have a little of all your favorite candy bars! For some, it’s essential - I love Butterfinger, for instance, but can’t possibly eat a regular size bar or I won’t be able to open my mouth for a week. (The new diet - one Butterfinger bar a week…) So little Halloween size is perfect.

From the past, I remember alot of candy that didn’t seem to show up anytime but around Halloween: Baby Ruths, Goo Goo Clusters, Candy Corn (of course), Hot Shots, Jolly Ranchers, that big piece of caramel on a stick–what was that called?, those sour Smarties, Charms Blow Pops, and Candy Cigarettes–not so kosher now, but I liked the candy and they didn’t entice me to smoke!
Now it’s all “fun sizes” of larger candy bars, WHICH IS FINE BY ME.

Fall is my favorite time of year. I have pumpkins, gourds and mums all over my house. I love to cook stew, red bean and rice and chicken and dumplings. All the window are open now and I can hear the children playing, dog barking and one of the hen voicing her opinion. I couldn’t ask for a better time of year.
Cap’n, that caramel-on-a-stick thing was a Sugar Daddy or a Slo-Poke (they were competitors, like Coke and Pepsi). There was a caramel-on-a-sick covered in chocolate called a Sugar Mama (the Slo-Poke equivalent of that was called a Black Cow), and then there were Sugar Babies and their dipped-in-chocolate cousins, Milk Duds (my personal fave: just right for eating while sitting in the balcony of the Alabama–you could pelt people down below with them too.)
I liked candy cigarettes too, especially the ones that were wrapped in paper. The candy or gum part was heavily coated with powdered sugar, so you could “puff” on them and “smoke” would come out. Our children have gotten candy cigarettes in their Trick-or-Treat bags before, only now they simply call them “candy sticks” and the package is not a mock-up of a cigarette box.
