No computer. It’s dead. My computer with all my files on it. My computer with must be mailed in to the computer people to have it’s motherboard replaced. I’m sad. Oh. so. very. sad. Sad to the point of tears. Many tears. And a tantrum. My life is on that computer. My recipes. Shopping list. All my research on preservatives and additives and my sons allergic reactions. All our home school files. Everything I have been working on for the last year that I need to function is on that computer. fortunately if I buy a program I always, ALWAYS, get the CD version so I can re-install if I ever have to do so. But my files? While I back them up I have not been diligent lately with backing them up to something other than my built in hard drives. But my pictures, ah, my pictures. I have those on an external drive. I have done that since day ONE. I take all my photos in very high resolution and they suck up a lot of space. I have two external hard drives specifically for my photos. I have not backed those up to CD in a long time. I will be doing that soon. Well, when I get my ‘puter fixed.
Here’s the deal. They told me to make sure I backed up all my files before I mailed it to them. But the computer will not come on for me to back them up. It would be nice if I could do that. I would love to be able to back up all my files as they said they will be reinstalling my OS after they replace my motherboard. So I have to find someone who can take out my hard drives, then back them up for me, put them back in before I ship them off. Problem. I don’t know anyone who can do that. I don’t know anyone who will do that for free. I feel quite confident in doing that myself, but I don’t have what it takes to do that. Our budget. It’s tight. I can not squeeze the funds out of this paychecks budget to pay someone to do this. That means at least a two week wait before I can back up my files. The turnaround time once it gets to them is ten days. So now we are looking at four weeks or more to get my computer back. Because we have to calculate in the weekends and the shipping time we can go ahead and add a fifth week in there.
It’s about ten o’clock in the morning. It was time for everything to fall apart. Things have been going too smoothly lately. I should have been better prepared. No, I am not going to be all gloom and doom, but I am going to tell you my morning so you can leave me lots of smilies and hugs in my comments. (Because it’s been that kind of day and as SmockDaddy says, “blogging is just emotional trick or treating” and I am knocking on your door today in my smiley costume begging for blog candy. OK?)
I got up to make my coffee and messed it up. I had to remake my coffee. Sigh. I went into my office to turn on my computer. It wouldn’t turn on. It kept getting stuck in a cycle. I will not give you the gory details, but suffice it to say. It died. I had promised a child I would make pancakes or waffles this morning. I decided to put my computer woes out of my head and go into the kitchen to make breakfast. I began putting all the ingredients into the bowl only to discover someone else used some of the ingredients and I did not have enough. My son was very sad. It was cereal for breakfast. Not the same thing is it? I forgot to move my clothes over from the washer to the dryer last night so I am still in my pajamas as the water here is atrocious and my clothes now have to be washed at least two more times to get the smell out of them before I can put them in the dryer.
Our bread machine is not working either. I know I can make bread the old fashioned way, but the time involved with that and the number of loaves we go through in a day is just not jiving with the time I have (or do not have).
I will not be able to upload any pictures for a while as I no longer have a way to upload them to my external drive and I no longer have the means to watermark them before uploading. My PhotoShop is on my computer.
I have lost all my e-mails as well. If you have e-mailed me with any questions or info about the swap or anything else, please resend so I can check and respond via web-mail. I hate web-mail and I never leave e-mails on my server because that takes up so much space. I archive them on my hard drive. So for the next little bit, if you have anything to send my via e-mail please use SmockLady [at] gmail [dot] com to reach me.
I’ll try to post later about something good. I need to remind myself of a few blessings. I have a list I want to share, but I am out of time and SmockDaddy needs his computer back.

While my day definitely has been as bad as your I can relate somewhat … At 4AM this morning I bolted upright in bed, broke out in a sweat, and said out loud to no one in specific … “It’s not going to work” and needless to say I haven’t been back to sleep yet. I would have been better off getting up and coming on into the office at 4AM and fixing the problem then going back home to bed. I rushed into the office in a mad dash to ‘fix’ the problem. I got everything taken care of, then found out that my worries were needless … my initial plans would have worked anyway … I feel like I’ve wasted an entire morning and I still don’t have anyone to help me load the yard sale stuff off my balcony tonight … but that’s another story I’ll save for another day.

I’m so very sorry. There’s little quite as crazy-making as big computer troubles. I hope you’ll be able to work it out soon… and get those backups made. (I use Mozy Home, an online service to back up stuff… you have to have high speed internet, which I won’t in a couple weeks… at least for a while.)
Not to hijack, just to share — at least there wasn’t a shootout three doors down from your apartment, and a gun left on your balcony and a bullethole by your door…. I’ve really got to do a post. A little too much excitement, that’s for sure.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Hugs! I know what you mean, my life is on my computer too. My mom’s computer just died, and she’s not nearly as dependent on it as we are, but she can barely function without it. I hope your computer feels better soon.

Laptop? If so, let me see if I can hook you up. A friend of mine at work would probably help ya’ out for free. I’ll need to know what all you want backed up (*.doc, *.xls, programs, etc.).
I’ve got an college intern working with me and the laptop he was using keeled over with a bad mobo. He’d been working on a inventory database. Our IT lady was able to connect to the harddrive and copy all of the files to a CD. Will that work for you?
