Overheard

Our across-the-street neighbors have a grandson named Caleb who comes to visit every so often. He is 9 1/2 and a very nice little boy. Our Goro likes it when Caleb comes to town and they often play together. Caleb is also homeschooled. The other day when Goro wasn’t feeling well he asked if the girls could come out to play. He plays well with all our children. But today Goro was a bit on the grumpy side and so was Caleb. Apparently, Caleb and the girls weren’t getting along so well, as children sometimes do. At one point we suggested that all parties involved needed a bit of a short break and then some later afternoon playtime. All parties agreed, then promptly proceeded to play together quite well without the suggested break. Ok, so now that you have the history, here’s the conversation:

Princerella: (sweetly) “I like Calem. Calem is nice.”
Birdie: (kind of cross) “No he’s not. He was being mean today.”
Princerella: (extremely deadpan and without ever looking up from her applesauce) “I never liked Calem.”
