My Children just blow my mind sometimes

I am a poor speller, always have been. I truly believe it was the way I was taught. I don’t remember if the process or style had a name although I am sure it did, but it’s changed so much since then anyway it wouldn’t much matter to remember it. For phonics and spelling we use Spell to Write and Read and The Wise Guide which is based on the original Spaulding concept: The Writing Road to Reading. As a result I have seen my children fly with their reading and spelling skills. I’ve seen them grow a real love of reading too and that warms my heart. Reading is so important to so many aspects of life and learning. If one can read, one can go anywhere and learn anything - the world is theirs for the taking. Goro is just starting third grade work and we did a diagnostic spelling test for him and his placement is at the 4.5 grade level for spelling and reading. Mog is starting 6th grade work and her placement is at the 9.3 grade level for spelling and reading. This is incredible I think, but it can create one little issue at times - the agreement of reading material that is age appropriate, yet skill level and challenging. Goro has not had too much of an issue with this as he will still read Geronimo Stilton and Hank the Cowdog over and over again for some great laughs. He will also read Harry Potter books with such great interest and discussion afterwards of what he’s read that I will encourage either level of reading. He is a very intense young man. Goro will read some books over and over again, but not much; she wants to read it once and move on to another in the same series or just another book. Anything about horses seems to suit her fancy. When she was in second grade I think she went through every single Pony Pals book that had been written at that time.
