It’s another DOINK! DOINK!
Well, we have our power back and I slept late after a night and a day of not sleep and wind howling and trees falling and sweating form no air conditioner and no coffee (OH, the sin of it all, especially those last two). Actually, Starbucks had power yesterday morning, so a trip there was deemed a necessity. It was good. So was my pumpkin bread. I only have a few minutes before I buckle down with the children and do some school and work. They are none too happy with the fact that we are doing school today because all the local schools are still out. Jindal called for almost the entire state’s schools to be closed for Tuesday and Wednesday, even before the storm hit, but that was because they are using every bus (whether charter, city, or school) for evacuation purposes. Of course they have to use them to get all the evacuees back to their homes.
DOINK!
I was in the middle of doing some redesigning of my blog when we realized we were about to lose the power. I had hoped to get my new colors up for yesterday morning, but instead of just changing the colors to some Autumn ones I deciding (because I can never do anything small and quick) to do a fairly big change. The basic functions and layouts will be the same I am changing around the colors if a bigger way. I’m going to live with it in private for the better part of today to see if I really like it. As of right now, I do like it because I always use my blog as a test of a challenge in learning how to do something I did not already know how to do before I jump in a do it for a client. So, I don’t always do that but one request led to one thought and then another until it became a challenge I had to learn how to do. While I like what I did, I would rather have it live somewhere else I think instead on on my blog. I may use it for a while then return to the basics like it is now - just some CSS color changes.
So we have a bunch of limbs to clean up. Right now our ground is so saturated that our feet sink when we walk on it. We are supposed to get rain off and on, more on than off, throughout the week until Sunday. I predict that at some point throughout this week we will be without power again from the winds knocking down lose limbs that have to make it all the way down to the ground or trees that get toppled because their roots have nothing to hold on to in the wet ground anymore. There is a big gorgeous oak tree down the street from us that got toppled from nothing more than the deep saturation from all the rain. A few other trees in our neighborhood went down, but fortunately no one was hurt. One tree went over so slowly (again, wet ground) that it just leaned against the house where it was. It does not even seem to have damaged any shingles where it is resting.
DOINK!
And while I wrote this post the power went out, but I figured it would at some point this morning. I awoke to the sound of five large tree and power company trucks outside cutting up one of the downed trees that took out our power. Yesterday they rerouted our power so they could work on getting that tree out of the way. We had been told that would not get done until today. I knew that once they got the tree out of the way of the wires and the street and the power company had been able to replace the power poles and the wires they would have to turn us back off to route us back to our regular unit. The tree in that picture up there was the cause of our problem.
So many others near us are far worse off than we are. Our friends over in Monroe are flooding; the ground is too saturated to absorb anymore and the rivers are rising. All the residents of the Monroe and West Monroe areas have been asked to just stay home as it is too dangerous to get out and drive around. There are some other church members across town that were told they would be without power for maybe the rest of the week.
DOINK!
One more thing, I think, when I started this post it was 6:17 in the morning. Bairno woke up and came down the hall, gave me some morning hugs with big grins and kisses after which eh looked around and saw that we were the only two awake and out of the beds. He got down from my lap, stomped (loudly) down the hall and began yelling, “GUYS! GUYS!” to see if he could rouse them. It worked. Now I am no longer in my
DOINK!
The power is on right now and I must take advantage to grind and brew; it is almost eight o’clock and I have not yet had my morning java jive. It calleth. I ask you, my friends from MS and LA, how did you fair and are you OK?

Glad to hear you guys are back online. We are keeping an eye on Hanna here in Georgia but so far, it appears to be headed for the Carolinas. We need the rain here but the oldest young princess cheers at her first football game on Saturday morning, so it would be nice to be able to play versus a rainout.

We’ve been watching the weather here with prayers in our hearts for friends in the stormy areas. I’m glad to know you guys made it through with only a few power outs and some tree debris to clean up! I’m hoping for similarly bland storm reports from my other friends…this is one area where excitement is usually not good news.
karens last blog post..It’s 8:11am, and…
We’re doing better than expected over here. We haven’t even lost power. (That’s the great thing about having no big trees in the neighborhood.) We can’t go anywhere because everywhere else is flooded, but we’re on high ground.
chef - yes, we are watching all of them actually. Aren’t there three more out there now.
karen - from the looks of it all most people fared well. There are many without power that will remain that way for many days. In relevance to what it could have been, being without power is not that bad.
MK - we are glad you guys are on high ground like that, but you still have to be stranded at home. Even for a homebody that can get old.
Glad to hear all is as OK-as in everyone is safe and unharmed!
Bairno is a trip!
Yes, we now have Hanna, Ike and Josephine to be wary of. I am a hurrican geek but enough is enough!

We are fine. Only I now have an ocean of pond overflow in the back yard. We did not actually have a problem til the day after landfall. We woke up to five inches of rain. 1/2 inch from entering by way of the front door. French drains do not work with thousands of oak leaves resting on top of the grates. Boo and I gat the drains cleaned and running in about ten minutes and the front porch drained quickly.
A near disaster was averted.
Now if I could say the same for this years presidential election.
I hope things get back to normal sooner than later. We had wind gust yesterday with rain and rain all day today so we’ve got trees falling all over the place and a good bit of flooding. Hang in there, we’ll make it!
