Hands
Two of our children (maybe a third) is left-handed, like their father. This has at times made it very difficult for me to assist with any hand-writing help of which they may need. Sitting opposite and getting them to mirror me does not work, especially with Princerella. She is not getting all the OT she needs these days, but we are doing what we can. She knows what each letter is, she can pick out all the letters of the alphabet, she can spell words verbally, but she still has trouble controlling her hands well enough to write her letters.
Yesterday all the children sat around the table filling out their Valentine cards for their individual Valentine’s Day parties at school or Co-Op. SmockDaddy helped Princerella with her task while I helped CowBoy. For each of them, we (the adults) wrote the friends’ names on the cards on the To: and the children wrote their names in the From: spot. CowBoy does very well for a three year old only struggling with the y in his name. Princerella knows how to make all the letters but needs help holding her hand steady; she makes all the movements of the writing herself, but gets assistance with the steadiness of her hand. So that is my tiny moment from yesterday (sorry I didn’t get it posted yesterday, we were very busy around here): Papa helping, with his strong hand gently wrapped around hers guiding it as she learns.

I can remember trying to help our youngest use scissors. It was frustrating for us both as she is a lefty and I am not. I finally decided that she would not be denied entry to Harvard for “sub par cutting skills” and she figured it out on her own. Like the redesign…you are my hero!

chef - hero? ha! i’m going to drive over that-a-way and have a “sit down learnin’ session” with you. thanks for the compliment. oh, the cutting, that is the funniest of it all - they all cut right -handed, by choice! even SmockDaddy. Princerella has some very special, very expensive spring-action scissors that also have a second set of holes for an assistant when necessary.
Fancy scissors…wish I had invented that! No right-handed cutting here..NO..just rams the scissors on the left hand and cuts away. Of course all of her Valentine cards were squares–might be a reason for that, huh? Other than her lovely holiday greeting that said “don’t be such a square” on each and every one. At least the paper was homemade, right?
