Don’t tell me it’s blasphemy!

Because it is NOT.

I grew up in a house with a father who graduated from Ole Miss. He is very proud of his Alma Mater, as any graduate should be. My brother went to UM for one year and decided he really did not like it. It just was not his cup of tea. He chose to transfer to Mississippi State; that was blasphemy. I thought my father would have a heart attack. It really did hurt his feelings, but that did not stop him from supporting his son. It did open the doors for quite a few wise cracks and jokes for years to come, and I’m sure they still exist to some extent. My brother graduated proudly from Mississippi State. I went to a small (well it was then) Christian college in Jackson, Mississippi called Belhaven College. I knew what I wanted to major in, but as most students do I changed my mind. I did not change my path totally, just shifted the emphasis a bit. I went to major in music performance, but soon fell in love with music theory and music history. Belhaven did not offer a degree in Music History. So I took as many courses as I could at Belhaven before I transferred. Why am I telling you this? Because of where I transferred - the University of Southern Mississippi and it’s great music program. Also, my sister graduated from the USM. At some point a family just has to decide to support all the state schools. HA! NOT! We each have our favorite.

I may have been born in Texas (we moved to Gulfport when I was a baby, right before Hurricane Camille), but Mississippi is in my blood. I miss Mississippi and my hubby misses Alabama (Roll Tide). His family will bring a little of Alabama to us in just a few short weeks for Thanksgiving, but me? I had it shipped in.

(Almost) Every Fall this cheese arrived at our door step. It marked the beginning of the holiday season for our family. The beginning of the family visits. The beginning of the constant food. The beginning of the festive nature of November and December and early January that slowly slipped into the end of it all with Mardis Gras.

So with all that Mississippi tradition, I find myself in the middle (almost) of Louisiana agricultural territory and the state school of the same nature - agriculture. A school that has its own dairy farm. A school that offers the community good dairy at good prices. And I have mine shipped. I sware it’s not blasphemy. It’s in my blood.

  1. One of our great friends works at LA Tech. He delivered our milk to us every weekend. It was the only milk my cousin would drink as a toddler. I too love the MSU’s cheese spread. We ordered it often. How I miss Louisiana!

  5. My parents both went to USM. My mother got her doctorate in education there and my dad has a business degree. My mom went to Millsaps for her undergraduate work and even did “missionary” work teaching at the State branch in Meridian. I was always a State fan growing up(because my Papaw was), but I ended up going to Southern (I graduated with a bachelors in social work) after loosing my art scholarship at Belhaven. That’s another story. Our family always send us MS State cheese at Christmas. I miss Mississippi too!
