Birdie came home from school yesterday with her portfolio from art class. I just love all of it. But the one I have pictured here is one of my two favorites. I have taken measurement as many of them are rather large (11 x 17 inches) and am going to get some frames for them. I had them hung up yesterday with some poster tape but they were too heavy for that and they fell down last night. Birdie has always been my creative thinker when it comes to the visual arts. She shows a great ability in being able to recreate, but she has a very uncanny ability to see things in an abstract way that I just love. She has never been confined by space or natural colors. She is very good at doing things the way they are supposed to be, but that doesn’t stop her from doing things, drawing things her way. I love it. I think it’s when we have a great understanding and knowledge of the rules that it becomes easier to bend and break those rules. Some of our best artists and musicians have been born out of a great understanding of the rules yet were also able to bend and break those rules beautifully. We don’t all have to like every style and every kind of art that’s out there. Or every genre that exists. But we were created a creative people and I for one am glad that there are those who continually push the limits of creativity. I know that in some fields (read: sports and science) pushing the limits can become dangerous and terrifying, even ethically and morally questionable at times, but I’m not writing about those right now. I am referring to The Arts.
I hope soon to have up some pictures she has drawn for me over the years that I find fascinating. I find them fascinating because I know my child. I know where she is coming from and I love what I see in her and in her art. Here’s the whole set.

Wow! She really is a good artist. You have every right to be proud of her.
Are those thumbprints? I just love thumbprint art. Good job Mary Abigail.
Oh, I just love the pussywillow vase!
I totally agree with your comments about ‘knowing the rules’ being the key to ‘breaking them’ effectively.
The one of the flowers is truly wonderful – there is a real artists eye working there
